On-demand Roaming in the Digital Age

By using proprietary algorithms, CSPs will be able to predict travel up to 40 days prior to departure with over 40% recall accuracy, and segment travelers based on their predicted purpose of travel.

Delivering an integrated and seamless digital travel experience

Being well positioned in the travel value chain and aware of every device that roams internationally, using the power of analytics, CSPs can even predict the future travel of a subscriber! Roaming and mobility data that was previously considered mundane, can now be converted into a goldmine of insights. These anonymized insights, coupled with opt-in preferences, can be used to deliver an integrated and seamless digital travel experience to the mobile subscriber that goes beyond the fragmented, multi-provider experience available today. The CSP, in turn, can open up new revenue streams that go beyond its traditional role of simply providing voice and data access to the roaming traveler! As a result, it has never been more important for CSPs to turn to new tactics in order to compete in a vastly different digital landscape by harnessing the power of digital data and delivering an amazing travel experience.

The power of analytics can be used to help CSPs drive more value from their data to create a more integrated, digital and one-stop (seamless) travel experience for the mobile-wielding traveler – going beyond just playing the dumb-pipe role of providing voice or data communication in order to compete in the vastly changing telecoms landscape. Using analytics taken throughout the life-cycle of a traveler’s journey - before, during, and after travel – CSPs can offer contextual content to the traveler compiled from an eco-system of travel service providers. And by building on these predictive insights derived from the data, CSPs will be able to open up new revenue opportunities in addition to those already secured from international roaming.

By using proprietary algorithms, CSPs will be able to predict travel up to 40 days prior to departure with over 40 percent recall accuracy, and segment travelers based on their predicted purpose of travel. This creates an opportunity for the CSP to be part of the booking flow earlier in the travel cycle, resulting in new revenue streams arising from digital advertising, premium placement, bookings, and even upselling special roaming packs.

This offers users a true digital-experience service, while helping CSPs to leverage their existing relationship with their subscribers and expand engagement beyond basic communication.

Making the transition from a legacy CSP to a proficient Digital Service Provider (DSP)

CSPs have been key enablers in the digital revolution that continues to impact a diverse range of industries including retail, financial services, healthcare, transportation and more. However, most CSPs haven’t yet adapted their own processes, including international mobile roaming, for the digital world and many lack the agility needed to be competitive. Other industries have now paved the way to online success, such as Amazon and Google, who have been quick to illustrate that the key to digital success lies in a customer-centric approach. In order to keep up and be a competitor of note, CSPs are going to have to make the transition from a legacy CSP to a proficient Digital Service Provider (DSP).

Mobileum believes the key to achieving this is data. CSPs have data in abundance and combining data collection with analytics will help in identifying new business models, including roaming travel insights, which can in turn drive operational excellence.

CSPs can utilise customer data to devise ways to leverage their customer relationships and build trust and loyalty at every customer touchpoint. This includes using customer journey mapping to feed into bundling initiatives and creating tariffs that their customers desire while becoming increasingly agile, multi-industry DSPs who are claiming the greatest market opportunities and resulting market share.

In order to make the leap from “providing roaming” to “delivering amazing travel experiences", CSPs must enhance their customer relationships and build trust and loyalty at every touchpoint. But all this change doesn’t come without risk. Only by implementing digital strategies with minimum disruption, will CSPs be able to truly achieve their digital aspirations. Mobileum is working with several key CSPs on projects that help them achieve their digital aspirations by offering a travel-based service that helps to create new revenue streams for the CSP and in turn allow the CSP to subsidize (or even zero-rate) the data consumed by the related app.
