Letter from the Editor

By: Tim Young

“Today is gone. Today was fun.
Tomorrow is another one.
Every day, from here to there,
funny things are everywhere.â€

-Dr. Suess
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

I like to think that there was a time when the first quote that would leap to mind as the end of another year approached was something scholarly and profound. But as a father whose older child just turned two, I spend far more time reading about the adventures of Sam-I-Am and the four fluffy feathers atop a Fiffer Feffer Feff than I do strolling through the prose of Nabakov or Fitzgerald or Emerson. And considering the many wonders of parenthood, that's a trade I'd happily make any day.

And in this case, my recent shift in literary consumption works just fine, because there is a slightly Seussian element to the trends and events that defined 2015.

"'Look here, you all,' the carrier sings. 'I've made an Internet of THINGS!'"

"We see 5G and LTE-U. Small cells, large cells and NFV too!"

"Altice from the east had a feast till it ceased, at the table gobbling cable while its market share increased."

In this issue of Pipeline, we explore some of the trends that made 2015 interesting. We talk 5G and M&A. We look at how user behavior is driving network evolution, and how API is changing the way we communicate. We delve into the strange world within the Internet of Things and discuss new KPIs for the digital age. We also hear from Ontology about paving the way for NFV, and bring you lots more of the latest news and opinion driving the communications world.

As we close another year of ups and downs in the industry, we thank you for continuing to make Pipeline your trusted source for information and opinion in the integrated communications and entertainment (ICE) technology space. We hope you'll join us as we continue into a new year of exploration and analysis, and let us know if there's anything we can do to make your experience here better by dropping me a line at editor@pipelinepub.com.

Best regards,
