Understanding M-CORD: Re-architecting Mobile Infrastructure for 5G Services

M-CORD will continue to pave the way for 5G

At the Open Networking Summit, the M-CORD partners and collaborators demonstrated the first functional M-CORD proof of concept (PoC) to showcase how operators can dynamically create new services and instantiate new cells and how enterprise customers can customize their services. This PoC will serve as the basis for creating a reference proof of design platform that can be used by the industry for competitive differentiation with additional applications.

The Future of M-CORD

M-CORD advances SDN and NFV innovation and adoption by enabling communication service providers to unlock the closed architecture of vertically integrated mobile platforms to accelerate service customization. By bringing intelligence to the edge of the network, service providers can realize new opportunities for edge services with cloud-based economies and cost savings.

By disaggregating and virtualizing the RAN and EPC, M-CORD allows for:

  • Independent scalability and high flexibility
  • Centralized control and coordination
  • Choice of solutions
  • Reduced cost
  • Delivery of new innovative services
  • Spectrum usage optimization

M-CORD will continue to pave the way for 5G by exploring and integrating visionary use cases such as connectionless service, real-time analytics for mobile edge, on-demand mobile edge services, and mobile network slicing. We are excited to be part of a pragmatic and open innovation like M-CORD that pushes the boundary to fundamentally change the status quo. There are countless exciting efforts that are waiting to be explored, therefore leading partners such as AT&T, SKT, and Verizon along with the collaborators are welcoming the community and industry to join and accelerate M-CORD movement.
