Letter from the Editor

By: Scott St. John, Pipeline

The notion of ubiquitous connectivity has been around for some time. In the early days of Pipeline, I recall being huddled around the desks of fledgling editors talking about how broadband and 3G were going to change everything. That was just the beginning.

Fast forward to today, and the evolution of connectivity has advanced by leaps and bounds. Today, your smartphone is really, really smart. You can take it on a plane, train, across the ocean and into emerging markets without any interruption in service—taking your unlimited voice, text, and data package in tow. Networks traverse the air, land, sea, and space. Network speeds have been turbocharged with AI, machine learning, edge, cloud and virtual technologies. Satellite has even received a boost with the advent of new acceleration and modem technologies to support 5G service requirements.

Connectivity has now become ubiquitous, and mobile pervasive. But, this is just another beginning. The next step in the evolution of our Digital Era. This is a game changer, without a doubt. The culmination of these technologies will unlock never-before-seen societal advancements. These advancements will be used to address world hunger, bring healthcare to regions where it is not available—and to treat and cure diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Self driving vehicles are on the way, and they may even deliver your next order of groceries to your door. This new, digital future will be a fundamental shift, ushering in a new drove of opportunities—and risk. Which is why this issue of Pipeline is so important.

In this issue of Pipeline, we explore the topic of pervasive mobility and look at the challenges, opportunities and risk related to the next generation of wireless services. Ranplan Wireless shows how the battle for 5G is moving indoors. MetTel walks us through use cases where ubiquitous connectivity power by AI is being used today by fleet operators, utilities, and municipalities. Arium Stream helps accelerate the rollout of 5G services with more efficient backhaul planning, and Gilat Satellite Networks explores ways satellite can be used for cellular backhaul by separating the myths from the facts. Neural Technologies demonstrates how 5G services can be used to improve the customer experience (CX), while Nokia underscores the importance of designing secure 5G Networks. MobileEdgeX explores the storm that's brewing at the network edge, Stealth Communications shows us how 5G and Wi-Fi 6 can coexist, and our own Dr. Mark Cummings postulates on how building software-driven ecosystems can fuel innovation. All this, plus a digest of the latest industry news and more.

We hope you enjoy this and every issue of Pipeline
