New Network Controller Converges Network Layers, Integrates Multivendor Connections

Sedona Orchestrates Across Vendors in OIF SDN Transport API Interoperability Demonstration

Sedona Systems today announced the successful test of what it claims is the industry's first control platform to function across diverse multilayer, multivendor, multicarrier networks

Sedona Systems, the global leader in multilayer IP/MPLS-Optical network control and optimization, announced today that its NetFusion multilayer control platform has successfully fulfilled the role of multidomain controller in the Optical Internetworking Forum’s (OIF) Transport API (T-API) interoperability demonstration.

NetFusion was the top level controller and orchestrator of services across four optical domains and the central interface to provisioning applications for the entire test network in Telefonica’s lab.

The OIF and Open Networking Foundation (ONF) have partnered to lead the industry toward the widescale deployment of commercial SDN by testing the ONF’s T-API standards. The interoperability test and demonstration, managed by the OIF, addressed multilayer and multidomain environments in global carrier labs located in Asia, Europe, and North America. The testing successfully demonstrated that T-API enables real-time orchestration of on-demand connectivity setup, control, and monitoring across diverse multilayer, multivendor, multicarrier networks.

Sedona’s NetFusion is the industry’s first control platform that converges network layers, automatically discovering multivendor topology and traffic for both Optical and IP/MPLS layers, as well as the cross-layer connections between them. This allows network operators to create and deploy new services more rapidly and to significantly reduce capital and operational costs through more efficient use of their networks.

In the OIF demonstration, NetFusion, working with several lower-level domain controllers, successfully discovered topology and services across multiple vendor domains. In a second phase of testing, NetFusion, again working with lower-level domain controllers, established an on-demand, low-latency IP link and the underlying optical path across multiple IP and optical network domains.

"We are heartened by the success of the OIF’s SDN T-API testing,” said Ori Gerstel, CTO at Sedona. “For many years, the telecom industry has been held back by disconnected multilayer, multivendor networks that are expensive to build and operate, and are at odds with the need for rapid provisioning of new services. We developed NetFusion to solve these exact challenges, and it’s exciting to see it as part of the future taking shape in this demonstration. The collaboration between the OIF, ONF, service providers, and vendors is a very positive step forward.”

OIF SDN Transport API Interoperability Demonstration

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) and the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) are leading the industry toward the wide scale deployment of commercial SDN by testing key Transport Application Programming Interfaces (T-API). The interoperability test and demonstration, managed by the OIF, addresses multi-layer and multi-domain environments in the following carrier labs: China Telecom, China Unicom, SK Telecom, Telefonica and Verizon. These carriers defined real world use cases including multi-domain orchestration of services delivered through Ethernet, OTN and optical switching. Carriers and vendors demonstrated how Virtual Network Functions (VNF) and SDN configured connectivity are combined to deliver service life cycle management.
