New CFP8 Specs Released Enabling Major Bandwidth Increase

The CFP MSA Group Releases CFP8 Specifications for First Generation 400Gb/s Interoperable Interface

The CFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) Group today announced the release of CFP8 Hardware Rev. 1.0 specifications to help drive 400 Gbps optical interface design enabling a major bandwidth increase for telecommunications, datacenters, and enterprise applications

The CFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) Group, consisting of Finisar, Foxconn Interconnect Technology, Fujitsu Optical Components, Lumentum, NeoPhotonics, Oclaro and Sumitomo Electric Industries, today announced the official release of CFP8 Hardware Rev. 1.0 specifications. The CFP8 form factor is expected to drive the first generation of interoperable 400Gb/s optical interfaces enabling a major leap in bandwidth for telecommunications, datacenters and enterprise applications. The CFP8 specifications document is now available at the CFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) website: www.cfp-msa.org.

"The CFP8 form factor is a critical requirement for early adopters of 400 Gb/s, with field trials using CFP8 modules now beginning." said Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, Founder and Principal Analyst at LightCounting Market Research. "We expect 400Gb/s deployment to ramp in 2018, first in core network applications such as client interfaces on routers and transport equipment, followed by cloud data centers."

The availability of this CFP8 specification will provide an industry standard form factor backed by multi-vendor support, as evidenced the large number of companies showcasing CFP8 technology or exhibiting CFP8 modules at OFC 2017.

About CFP8 Transceivers

The CFP8 modules support IEEE standards including optical 400GBASE-SR16, -FR8, -LR8 and electrical 400GAUI-16 and 400GAUI-8 802.3bs specifications, and feature a maximum transmission length of 10km. The module size is slightly smaller than CFP2, at 40 mm x 102 mm x 9.5 mm with similar excellent thermal performance. Its high-density 124-pin connector is compatible with future 800Gb/s applications.
