Wireless M2M: Seizing the Pervasive Internet Opportunity (Cont'd)

for M2M applications are very low. This is because, once a customer has chosen a particular network to use, it is considerably more difficult to change to another network – each device in the field may need to be visited individually to change the network SIM card, for example. Another reason associated with this has more to do with corporate account management: once a network operator is installed for M2M applications, it becomes much simpler to change the mobile voice account than the M2M one should the customer wish to rationalize his mobile operator suppliers. This represents a substantial potential threat to an incumbent voice account provider.

Real Time Data – The Next Internet Wave
In an increasingly competitive world, businesses are beginning to see the strategic significance of real time data from their machines and other connected devices as a crucial source of new business intelligence to strengthen their position in the market. Harbor Research sees this as the beginning of the third wave of the Internet, coming after E-commerce (the first wave) and enterprise E-enablement (the second wave).

Wireless has a major part to play in this and is likely to dominate fixed line connections in future years. Suppliers and service providers are beginning to wake up to the enormous potential that this offers. There is already strong evidence to suggest that those who move quickly to take up positions in the market are more likely to dominate and become the long term winners.
