"The nicest thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from."

-Andrew S. Tannenbaum

Tannenbaum should know a thing or two about what he speaks. In his work with MINIX and other projects in the computer world, he surely became familiar with any number of standards, both valid and half-baked.

The problem persists and exists in the telecommunications world as well. Standards are necessary, sure, but which ones? And how stringent should they be? And who is best to set them?

In this issue, we explore the state of standards and the modern applications of these standards. We hear from groups like the ITU-T on why standards are important, as well as from John Wilmes, CTO of Progress Software, and co-author of several books on NGOSS and the SID, on how standards can be practically applied. We'll also hear from cVidya and one of their CSP partners on how collaboration and interoperability, potential byproducts of standardization, can lead to stronger revenue assurance.

This month, we bring a few other exciting pieces of news to the table. First of all, we are pleased to announce the winners of the Communications Innovator Awards, co-sponsored by NPRG and Pipeline. The three CSPs we've chosen to honor display the very best in innovation in the space.

Also, we welcome Ed Finegold back to Pipeline. He was Pipeline's very first editor, and is one of our favorite writers in the OSS/BSS space. We trust that you'll be hearing a good deal more from Ed in Pipeline over the coming months.

All of that, plus the news from NXTcomm, and BIMS, another look at Management World, and all of your latest news and opinions.

Standards are necessary, sure, but which ones? And how stringent should they be? And who is best to set them?

As always, we remind you that if you haven't already done so, you can sign up for a free subscription to Pipeline to stay informed on all of the latest in the OSS space.

Enjoy!
