“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”

 ~ Abraham Lincoln

2009 is upon us, and has been for a little while now.  In addition to a new year, I think it's tough to shake the notion that we're in a bit of a new era, in many ways.  The economy is doing whatever it's doing.  (Whatever it is, it's nothing good.)  The geopolitical landscape is shifting.  Here in the United States, we have a new President that is a bit of a departure from Presidents past, in many ways.

The world, in short, is in a position of uncertainty.  Some good.  Some bad.  Some yet to be determined.

Beyond that, the communications sector is in a strange position.  Some of that is directly influenced by the phenomena listed above, and some of it has to do with other shifts and changes in the business world and technology landscape.

In this issue of Pipeline, we take a look at some of those changes. We have perspectives from Ed Finegold and Dick LeFave on the changing world of billing. We hear from LTC's Sean O'Reilly on the possibilities of 4G.  We hear from leaders in the vendor space, including Amdocs, CA, and Transverse.

The world, in short, is in a position of uncertainty.

In addition, we have all of the latest news and opinion from around the communications world.

Thank you for, once again, turning to Pipeline for the latest in this ever-shifting world.  If you haven't already done so, we invite you to subscribe to Pipeline today.  It's free and quick, and will be sure to benefit you in the long run, no matter how much things change.

All the best,

Tim Young
Editor-in-Chief
