New Year, New Challenges:

Letter From the Editor, January 2007.

Who doesn't enjoy the new year?  There are parties and confetti and kisses at midnight.  Above all, there are resolutions.  There are promises that we make to ourselves and to one another that ensure that the new year will be healthy, strong, motivated, and free from vice.  Romantics call this a time of self awareness and self-adjustment.  Cynics call it a time of lies, lies, lies.

It would be a tough thing to actually get ahold of how many New Year's resolutions are actually kept because most of us would be hard-pressed to admit defeat for failed resolutions.  (Furthermore, I'd be willing to bet that a few statisticians promised themselves that they'd do such a study this year, but never quite got around to it...)

Conventional wisdom, however, suggests that most resolutions are lucky to make it to February. That's fine if the resolution is to drop a few pounds or to listen to more public radio, but what if the resolution is to overhaul

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

~Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850

your fault management system to avoid future systems issues? Or to launch an IPTV service in order to remain competitive?  Can your business afford to let these resolutions fall prey to old habits and frightening costs?

In this issue of Pipeline, we take a look back at the year we are leaving behind and a look ahead to the one we are entering.  We'll look at December's TMW-Americas show and provide a behind-the-scenes look at what went on and why it matters.  We'll speak to an industry leader about changing business models and new opportunities.  We'll look at the emergence of Carrier Ethernet and where the technology is taking us, as well as some of the challenges of IPTV and other converged technologies.  Take a look around as you ponder how you 2007 will be stronger than your 2006.

Happy New Year, and Enjoy!
